Ubuntu shares the design of its new desktop installer

The design of the new Ubuntu installer has been made public by the Canonical design team.

We reported in February that Ubuntu was developing a new installer. And now, Canonical has disclosed the relevant design plan and demonstrated in detail the brand-new Ubuntu setting experience in the plan. The revised Ubuntu installer uses the same technology as its server setup tool and has a UI made by Google’s open-source Flutter.

Martin Wimpress, the former Ubuntu desktop director, explained in a February blog: “Creating a new desktop installer gives us the opportunity to revisit what features are most desirable to our community and enterprise customers. We have scoped the initial functional requirements, but welcome your feedback and contributions for the capabilities most important to you, your flavour, derivative or organisation.”

One point that needs to be emphasized is: the proposed new UI design does not completely strip the existing Ubiquity installer design, and the Ubuntu desktop has been using the Ubiquity installer since 2011.

But the new look is cleaner and has more white space design. It also includes new features not available in the existing Ubiquity installer, such as options to disable Secure Boot, disable BitLocker, and test Active Directory.

Although there is no timetable for the final launch of the new installer, we can imagine that Ubuntu will test it before the next LTS version is released. This makes Ubuntu 21.10 version may become the first Ubuntu release using the new version of the installer.
