NGINX CVE-2026-42533 Vulnerability Fixed by F5

NGINX CVE-2026-42533 vulnerability buffer overflow patch

NGINX developer F5 recently published a fresh security advisory about a dangerous bug. This flaw receives the tracking number CVE-2026-42533. Under certain settings, a hacker can easily exploit this weak spot. Consequently, the strike can crash NGINX worker processes or trigger remote code execution. Fortunately, the team quickly launched NGINX versions 1.30.4 and 1.31.3 to fix the problem.

Specific Configuration Triggers

This issue does not threaten every single NGINX setup automatically. Instead, the risk depends heavily on your custom system rules. Specifically, the flaw hides inside the regular expression map directives. It triggers when a string refers to past values from the regex match.

Technical Overflow Details

In general, NGINX counts the needed buffer size before writing any data. However, certain rules let the regex match change the capture state midway. Thus, the real data size mismatches the allocated buffer space. As a result, this error creates a serious stack-based buffer overflow.

Severity Ratings and Affected Versions

F5 provided different severity scores using various grading systems. Under the CVSS 4.0 rules, the flaw scores a high 9.2 rating. Meanwhile, the CVSS 3.1 setup gives it an 8.1 score. F5 states that the actual attack complexity remains quite high. Alarmingly, this issue affects versions 0.9.6 through 1.31.2. Therefore, this severe bug lived hidden inside the code for over a decade.

Updates and Mitigations

F5 strongly advises all web developers to update their tools immediately. To stay safe, you must move stable setups to version 1.30.4. Likewise, mainline users must upgrade to version 1.31.3. Furthermore, commercial platform admins should deploy NGINX Plus version 37.0.3.1. Additionally, you can always monitor fresh updates on the official NGINX security advisories page.

Temporary Fix Risks

Admins can deploy temporary fixes if an immediate upgrade remains impossible. For instance, you can rewrite map rules to use named captures. This step effectively avoids numbered options like $1 or $2. However, researchers warn that this change only blocks the primary attack path. In very unique setups, serious risks still remain. Thus, a temporary mitigation works only as a short transitional step. Ultimately, you must update the software to solve the security problem completely.
