Microsoft Sets the Clock: Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro Lose Security Updates on October 13, 2026

Windows 11 24H2 support deadline: Windows Update showing the Windows 11 25H2 upgrade before the October 2026 cutoff

Microsoft has announced the date after which millions of Windows 11 devices will be left without protection. The corresponding notice has already appeared in the Windows message center.

Who Is Affected and Who Is Not

The deadline concerns the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 build 24H2, along with Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016. Starting October 13, 2026, these systems will stop receiving monthly security updates and the preview fixes that close current threats. The Enterprise and Education editions, by contrast, remain untouched. For them, mainstream support continues until October 12, 2027.

The Recommended Escape Route: Windows 11 25H2

To avoid losing protection, users are advised to move to Windows 11 25H2. This update shipped in November 2025 and installs on top of version 24H2 without a full system reinstall.

Devices running Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro that are not managed by corporate IT departments should receive the 25H2 update automatically. However, users can postpone the installation indefinitely.

Checking eligibility is simple. Open Windows Update and press “Check for updates.” If the device is ready, the option “Download and install Windows 11, version 25H2” will appear.

When Windows Update Refuses to Cooperate

Sometimes the upgrade never surfaces. Suppose the “winver” command in the Run menu still reports version 24H2, while Windows Update insists everything is installed, and the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle is either enabled or locked. Together, these symptoms point to a malfunction in the update service.

Possible Remedies

Several fixes are worth trying. First, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, found under Troubleshoot and then Other troubleshooters. Alternatively, manually install update KB5054156, which unlocks the 25H2 download in Windows Update. Another path is a clean or in-place installation of the latest Windows release using the Media Creation Tool. Finally, consulting an AI assistant can help: it can walk through the specific registry settings, group policies, and update services on a given device and help restore Windows Update to proper working order.
