Microsoft Acknowledges Bug Warning Windows 10 LTSC/ESU Users That Support Ended
In recent weeks, some Windows 10 users have begun receiving alarming notifications about the end of support for their operating system — even in cases where their devices were enrolled in extended support programs. This has caused considerable confusion among corporate and educational users, who had been assured of updates at least until 2027.
The issue drew particular attention when users of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, both officially supported through 2032, started reporting such warnings. The malfunction appeared after the release of the October update (KB5066791), which triggered a wave of false end-of-support notifications following installation.
Microsoft promptly acknowledged the error, clarifying that the message displayed in Windows Update settings does not apply to systems covered by extended lifecycle support. The company released a targeted cloud configuration designed to remove the erroneous alert from affected devices. However, resolving the issue requires both an active internet connection and a system reboot.
Under current policy, Windows 10 has indeed reached the end of mainstream support for most users — with the exception of Enterprise LTSC, IoT LTSC, and customers participating in the paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. For users outside the European Union, the ESU subscription costs $30, granting continued access to security updates for several years beyond the standard Windows 10 lifecycle.
The misleading notification caused concern among license holders with extended support, leading some to fear that Microsoft had unilaterally altered its service terms. The company has since reaffirmed that the support timelines for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 remain unchanged, and that corresponding updates will continue to be delivered according to the established schedule.
