Windows 11 2025 Update (25H2) Focuses on Security and Legacy Component Removal
Windows 11 has received another major update — version 25H2, officially known as Windows 11 2025 Update. This annual release, according to Microsoft, is designed to be as lightweight and secure as possible. Distributed as an enablement package (eKB), it essentially activates features that were already embedded but hidden within version 24H2. This approach ensures a unified codebase and servicing branch, while new functionalities will continue to arrive through monthly updates.
The primary focus of this release is cybersecurity. The system now includes new mechanisms for detecting vulnerabilities during both build and runtime, along with AI-powered tools for secure programming. All enhancements comply with Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative policy and Security Development Lifecycle requirements. Legacy components such as PowerShell 2.0 and the WMIC console have been removed, making the operating system both leaner and more secure.
The update is available now, though its rollout is gradual. Devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 with the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option enabled will be the first to receive it. If a computer shows potential compatibility issues with drivers or applications, the update will be temporarily withheld until the problems are resolved. Broader availability will expand over the coming months, with detailed progress updates published in the Windows Release Health dashboard.
For enterprise and education customers, version 25H2 is available through Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Among the new business-oriented features are support for Wi-Fi 7 and tools that allow IT administrators to remove preinstalled Microsoft Store apps via Intune or Group Policy. Importantly, this release also resets the support cycle: 24 months for Home and Pro editions, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Certain features introduced in 24H2 are now enabled by default. Additionally, the update will be included in Windows Server Update Services beginning October 14, 2025, alongside the October security rollup.
Microsoft strongly encourages users to upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 to benefit from the full suite of new features and the latest protection measures. The company has pledged to provide timely updates on rollout status and potential issues through the Release Health Hub and its official @WindowsUpdate account.
