Mortgage Market Crisis: SitusAMC Breach Exposes Data for Customers of JPMorgan, Citi
The servicing chain of the U.S. mortgage market has suffered a new disruption following an incident at SitusAMC — a key link responsible for supporting mortgage transactions, processing payments, and storing document packages for America’s largest banks. The situation has alarmed the financial sector, as this third-party contractor handles vast troves of borrowers’ personal data, and breaches at this level have the potential to affect numerous institutions simultaneously.
SitusAMC specialists reported that on November 12 they detected suspicious activity within their systems and later confirmed unauthorized access to corporate materials. Compromised assets included accounting records, legal agreements, and potentially customer information from major banks, including the contents of mortgage applications. The company stated that it immediately engaged external experts, notified federal agencies, and acted to contain the incident. According to SitusAMC, no malicious encryption occurred, and its services are now fully operational.
According to The New York Times, JPMorgan Chase, Citi, and Morgan Stanley all received notices about possible data exposure. A JPMorgan representative emphasized that the bank itself was not breached. Citi declined to comment, and Morgan Stanley had not responded by the time of publication. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the bureau is assessing the scope of the incident alongside the affected organizations and, at present, sees no impact on the functioning of banking services.
Buyers and analysts on Wall Street have expressed concern, noting that SitusAMC holds an extensive volume of information from credit files, including Social Security numbers. The platform is considered a foundational operational component for banks issuing residential mortgages and commercial real-estate loans.
