The Tails project has released Tails 7.2, an updated version of its anonymous operating system, published on 13 November 2025. The new release introduces updated versions of the browser, email client, Linux kernel, and several refinements aimed at improving usability and privacy.
The most significant change concerns Tor Browser 15.0.1, detailed in the Tor Project blog. Version 15.0 is based on Firefox 140 and includes vertical tabs (as described in Mozilla’s documentation), tab groups following the Tab Groups specification, and an updated address bar with enhanced search capabilities highlighted in the Firefox blog.
The email client has been updated to Thunderbird 140.4.0, with details available in the release notes. The build also incorporates the Linux 6.12.57 kernel.
The Root Console has been removed from the system; users are now encouraged to run sudo -i in a standard terminal. Notifications containing the “Don’t ask again” option will now appear only after system time has been synchronized.
Among the fixes, the update disables Thunderbird’s network connections to Mozilla’s telemetry services, as documented in issue 21275. A full list of changes is available in the official changelog.
Users running Tails 7.0 or later may apply the update automatically. If the update is unavailable or the system fails to boot afterward, the developers recommend performing a manual upgrade.
Installation guides for deploying Tails 7.2 onto a new USB drive are provided for Windows, macOS, Linux, and for Debian or Ubuntu via the command line using GnuPG, as detailed in the expert installation manual.
The developers caution that Persistent Storage will be deleted if the system is installed rather than upgraded. The image is available for download as a USB file or as an ISO suitable for virtual machines and DVDs.
