Stellantis Discloses Data Breach, Warns Customers of Phishing
Automotive giant Stellantis has disclosed a breach of customer data following an attack on an external contractor servicing its North American support center. According to the company, the attackers gained access only to names and email addresses, while financial and other sensitive information remained unaffected.
Upon discovering the incident, Stellantis launched an internal investigation, notified law enforcement authorities, and began sending warnings to customers about the heightened risk of phishing attempts. The manufacturer has not revealed the identity of the compromised partner nor the number of customers affected.
The disclosure comes amid a severe crisis at another major automaker. Earlier in September, Jaguar Land Rover admitted to a large-scale cyberattack that crippled production lines and retail systems worldwide. Factories in the United Kingdom and beyond have been shut down at least until September 24, while suppliers report disrupted orders and delayed payments.
Dealerships have been unable to use spare parts ordering systems or process customer payments, deepening financial strain. In response to the operational shutdown, the company has resorted to layoffs, while unions have urged the government to introduce support measures similar to the short-time work programs rolled out during the pandemic.
Although Jaguar Land Rover has not officially disclosed how the attack was carried out or who was behind it, several reports suggest ransomware was involved. Meanwhile, a newly formed group calling itself “Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters” (a blend of Scattered Spider, Lapsus$, and ShinyHunters) has already claimed responsibility.
The disruption underscores the fragility of the automotive sector, where manufacturing and logistics are inextricably tied to digital infrastructure and global supply chains — making the consequences of cyberattacks particularly devastating.
