Apple and Samsung dominate the global smartphone market in 2023H1

Recently, statistics released by Omdia unveiled that Apple and Samsung reigned supreme in the global smartphone market of 2023. These tech behemoths each secured five models among the top ten rankings, with Apple demonstrating a markedly dominant position, claiming the first four spots exclusively for its iPhone lineup.

According to Omdia’s disclosure, the iPhone 14 Pro Max led the charge with a shipment volume of 26.5 million units in the first half of 2023, securing the zenith. The iPhone 14 Pro trailed closely in the second position with 21 million units. The third spot was adorned by the iPhone 14, with sales tallying up to 16.5 million units, a figure that, given prevalent market critiques, seems somewhat underestimated. The fourth rank was held by the iPhone 13, accumulating 15.5 million units, marginally less than its successor. Somewhat intriguingly, Apple’s older marvel, the iPhone 11, which has been in circulation for several years, made its mark in the top ten. It’s noteworthy that in just a few weeks, the iPhone 11 will commemorate its fourth anniversary, yet its market performance remains commendable, boasting shipments of 6.9 million units in the first half of the year.

Samsung gracefully clinched positions five through nine with the Galaxy A14, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy A14 5G, Galaxy A54 5G, and Galaxy A34 5G. Their respective shipment volumes were 12.4 million, 9.6 million, 9 million, 8.8 million, and 7.1 million units. Evidently, the majority of Samsung’s offerings belong to the mainstream or entry-level segments. However, worthy of laudation is their flagship, the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Yet, its shipment volume pales in comparison to its rival, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, with the latter’s shipments approximately 2.76 times that of the former.

Placing the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s shipment volume within the context of the same period in 2022, it seems slightly overshadowed. It’s imperative to recognize that the iPhone 13’s shipments then stood at 33.7 million units. Nevertheless, both the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the iPhone 14 Pro, being premium offerings with a lofty price tag, securing the top two positions is indeed a testament to their indelible market imprint.
