Western Digital WD_BLACK SN770M SSD released, M.2 2230 specifications, up to 2TB optional

Western Digital has unveiled the WD_BLACK SN770M NVMe SSD, a single-sided M.2 2230 specification offering a more compact PCB design. This latest addition augments Western Digital’s SSD portfolio, furnishing consumers with a fresh alternative. Rather than simply trimming an M.2 2280 specification product, Western Digital emphasizes that this newly optimized design is particularly apt for space-constrained environments, like the increasingly popular handheld gaming device, the Steam Deck, enhancing gamers’ storage capabilities.

The “M” in WD_BLACK SN770M likely stands for “mini”. Performance-wise, it’s largely on par with the M.2 2280 specification WD_BLACK SN770, bearing a sleek black exterior. It’s crafted with a DRAMless design, mirroring many contemporary mainstream PCIe 4.0 SSDs, but with a more diminutive footprint.

The WD_BLACK SN770M is available in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. The 2TB and 1TB variants boast sequential read speeds of up to 5150MB/s, while the 500GB variant offers 5000MB/s. Regarding write speeds, the 1TB variant excels with 4900MB/s, followed closely by the 2TB variant at 4850MB/s, and the 500GB variant at 4000MB/s. The peak random reads for these products are 460K, 740K, and 650K IOPS respectively, while all maintain a peak random write of 800K IOPS. Durability is rated at 300TBW per 500GB.

Western Digital has also revealed the pricing for the WD_BLACK SN770M: $74.99, $109.99, and $219.99 for the 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB models respectively, all backed by a five-year warranty. This innovative product is currently open for pre-orders in international markets and will officially launch on September 22, 2023.
