SK hynix Launched CXL-based Computational Memory Solution

SK hynix announced two months ago that it has developed the first CXL memory sample based on DDR5 DRAM and plans to enter mass production in 2023. Now SK hynix has gone a step further and announced that it has successfully developed the industry’s first CXL-based Computational Memory Solution (CMS) with computing functions, integrating computing functions in a 512GB CXL memory module.

At the recent OCP (Open Compute Project) global summit held in San Jose, USA, SK hynix unveiled the CXL-based Computational Memory Solution and its hardware and software platform for the first time, showing customers the next-generation high-performance computing solution and its value. The CMS modules are expected to be installed on next-generation server platforms to improve system performance and energy efficiency.

As an open interconnection protocol, PCIe-based CXL has higher bandwidth and enables high-speed and efficient interconnection between CPU and GPU, FPGA, or other accelerators which meet the requirements of today’s high-performance heterogeneous computing and provide higher bandwidth and better memory consistency. On the basis of the CXL protocol, SK hynix integrates scalable high-capacity memory and computing functions to launch the CMS module.

SK hynix’s CMS module uses four 128GB traditional memory, with a system-on-chip, providing machine learning and data filtering computing functions commonly used in applications such as big data analysis. It has a PCIe 4.0 interface, supports CXL.mem and CXL.io protocols, and two network connectors for connecting to other nodes. The power consumption of the CMS module is not yet determined. It is equipped with an 8Pin external power supply interface that can provide 150W of power.

SK hynix plans to conduct related demonstrations at the SK Technology Summit held in South Korea in early November, and will actively carry out research and development and cooperation related to CXL memory in the future to provide customers with different added value.
