Nintendo sold a total of 15.7 million Nintendo Switch units in fiscal 2024

Recently, Nintendo disclosed its financial results for the fiscal year 2024 (April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024), revealing that the annual revenue reached 1.6718 trillion yen, marking a 4.4% increase from the previous fiscal year. The operating profit for this period was 528.9 billion yen, up by 4.9% year-over-year.

Revenue related to gaming consoles (including hardware, software, and additional content) totaled 1.5678 trillion yen, a 1.5% rise from the last fiscal year. Domestic sales in Japan accounted for 21.7% of the total, while international markets contributed 78.3%. This fiscal year, Nintendo sold 15.7 million hardware units, a decrease of 12.6% from the previous year. The Nintendo Switch sold 3.86 million units, a decline of 37.1%; the Nintendo Switch OLED model sold 9.32 million units, a slight increase of 1.1%; and the Nintendo Switch Lite sold 2.52 million units, down by 3.7%. Additionally, during the same period, 199.67 million software units were sold, a 6.7% decrease, with “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” selling 20.61 million units, “Super Mario Bros.: Wonder” selling 13.44 million units, and “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” selling 8.18 million units.

To date, the cumulative sales of the Nintendo Switch series have reached 141.32 million units, inching closer to the Nintendo DS series’ 154.02 million units, with total game sales amounting to 1.23582 billion units. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s President Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be unveiled within this fiscal year, likely in early 2025.

Nintendo forecasts a revenue of 1.35 trillion yen for the fiscal year 2025, with hardware sales projected at 13.5 million units and software sales at 165 million units. Due to these figures falling short of market expectations, the stock price briefly dropped nearly 5%, marking the largest decline since April 3.
