Major Cyberattack Forces Jaguar Land Rover to Extend Production Halt Until October
The British automaker Jaguar Land Rover has announced a further extension of its production halt until October 1. This decision follows a major cyberattack that forced the company to suspend operations in early September. According to the corporate website, the delay is intended to provide clarity for the coming week and ensure a smooth, phased restart of assembly lines.
The company emphasized that its specialists, working in close collaboration with cybersecurity experts, the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, and law enforcement authorities, are engaged around the clock to guarantee a safe and secure resumption of production.
The breach was first disclosed on September 2, when attackers gained access to corporate data, prompting security teams to shut down several critical systems. The incident severely disrupted vehicle output, and management at JLR swiftly announced a temporary suspension of operations. The company initially planned to restart production lines on September 24 with a gradual return to normal capacity. However, the recovery process has proven more complex than anticipated, and the shutdown has now been extended into early October. Jaguar Land Rover has not disclosed the specific reasons behind the latest postponement.
The Unite trade union had previously urged the UK government to introduce a special program allowing temporary short-time work arrangements, aimed at protecting the income of thousands of employees left in uncertainty by the enforced stoppage.
Responsibility for the attack has been claimed by a group linked to the cybercriminal collective known as Scattered Spider. The group is notorious for a series of social engineering campaigns that crippled major retail networks in the United Kingdom. In response, law enforcement agencies in both the UK and the United States have intensified their investigations in an effort to identify those orchestrating the attacks.
