Las Vegas Casino Operator Boyd Gaming Discloses Cyberattack, Employee Data Compromised
The major casino and hotel operator Boyd Gaming, headquartered in Las Vegas, has disclosed to U.S. regulators a cyberattack that allowed intruders to gain access to its internal IT systems and exfiltrate certain data. In a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company confirmed that information relating to employees—as well as “a limited number of other individuals”—had been compromised. The precise categories of stolen data and the full scope of affected parties were not specified.
It is worth noting, however, that in such disclosures the term “limited” does not necessarily imply a small-scale incident. In many cases, the phrase has masked breaches impacting tens or even hundreds of thousands of records, even though the wording appears restrained.
Boyd Gaming emphasized that operations at its properties were not disrupted. Federal law enforcement agencies have joined the investigation, while the company has begun notifying affected individuals and updating regulatory authorities in various states.
The filing also stated that the incident is not expected to have a material impact on the company’s financial condition. This is largely due to the protection afforded by a comprehensive cyber insurance policy, which covers not only incident response expenses but also the engagement of digital forensics specialists, remediation teams, potential litigation, and regulatory penalties.
Boyd Gaming operates 27 gaming properties across more than ten U.S. cities, most of them in Las Vegas, and is planning to open a new venue in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2027. The company employs roughly 16,000 people. For the year 2024, its annual revenue reached $3.9 billion, with $1 billion in income recorded in the most recent quarter. Additionally, in July the corporation generated $1.75 billion from the sale of its stake in the digital betting operator FanDuel.
