Kioxia releases CD8P series data center PCIe 5.0 SSD

Kioxia has announced the launch of the CD8P series of data center-grade SSDs. These new products are designed for general-purpose servers and cloud environments, where the data center applications can generate intricate mixed workloads within large-scale virtualized systems.

According to TechPowerup, Kioxia asserts that the CD8P series has achieved approximately 60% to 80% sequential reading performance improvement compared to the previous generation of PCIe 4.0 SSD products. It will offer customers an array of performance, capacity, and security options to meet the storage requirements of the next generation of digital enterprises and data center infrastructure. Based on data from market research firms, NVMe SSDs are projected to continue to grow in the coming years, with server and storage system PCIe capacity shipments expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 40% from 2022 to 2027.

The CD8P series enterprise-level NVMe SSDs feature a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface and support NVMe 2.0 specifications, NVMe management interface (NVMe-mi) v1.1d, and the Open Compute Project (OCP) data center NVMe SSDv specifications (in part). They are built upon internally developed controllers and 112-layer BiCS FLASH 3D TLC flash memory. With maximum sequential read speeds of 14,000 MB/s, and maximum sequential write speeds of 5,500 MB/s, the series offers a maximum random read of 2000K IOPS and a maximum random write of 400K IOPS. It delivers latencies below 250us in standard random read workloads, and below 1.8ms in standard OLTP class mixed workloads. The read-intensive (1 DWPD) capacity reaches up to 30.72TB, while the mixed-use (3 DWPD) capacity extends to 12.80TB. Additional features include Kioxia’s seventh-generation flash chip fault protection to ensure reliable data storage, power loss protection, and end-to-end data protection. The series also supports a variety of feature sets, including dual-port design, SIE, and SED, and is available in both E3.S (EDSFF) and 2.5-inch (U.2) form factors.

Kioxia states that samples of the CD8P series SSDs are currently being provided to customers for evaluation.
