Intel is extending the availability of its Optane Persistent Memory 100-series

During the second-quarter earnings call last year, Intel confirmed its formal cessation of the Optane operation, a move that incurred a depreciation of $559 million. This marked the sixth non-core business divestiture under the leadership of Pat Gelsinger, Intel’s CEO. Despite early assertions from Intel’s Vice President, Kristie Mann, suggesting that the third-generation Optane product was on the horizon, many opine that with Intel’s decision to terminate the Optane venture, related products will not see the light of day.

Optane Persistent Memory 100

As reported by TomsHardware, Intel has initiated the decommissioning process for all its Optane products, in tandem with the Optane operation’s impending culmination. Once viewed as a competitive advantage, Optane products have now been extricated from the support of future platforms, and the research and development work on 3D XPoint flash memory chips had ceased even earlier. However, in a surprising turn of events due to increased customer demand, Intel announced a postponement from the originally planned final shipment of Optane Persistent Memory 100 series products on September 30th of this year to December 29th, 2023.

Customers are recommended to secure additional Optane units at the specified 0.44% annualized failure rate (AFR) for safety stock. Intel will make commercially reasonable efforts to support last time order quantities for Intel Optane Persistent Memory 100 Series.

The specifics of how much additional product Intel will deliver with an extended shipping time of a quarter remain unclear. Given that this series of products is only compatible with certain Intel processors and limited to specific operating systems, its shipment volumes were likely not exceedingly high. Although only able to cater to particular server workloads, customers can increase the memory capacity of processors at a lower cost than traditional memory modules through these components, proving extremely beneficial for some applications.
