Innovating AR/VR Experiences: Apple’s Gesture Control Patent

A report by Patently Apple suggests that a recently approved patent application reveals Apple’s exploration of gestural interaction methods within augmented reality and other virtual visual environments.

The patent describes the use of a ring-like device in conjunction with camera-based recognition to determine user gestures, enabling actions such as opening files, scrolling through pages, or interacting with graphical interfaces.

Although the patent outlines a ring-shaped device as the hand-worn apparatus, its practical application in a product could take different forms, such as a glove or another external design, or even be realized through natural interaction experiences via the Apple Watch.

On the other hand, this patent may serve as a protective measure for Apple’s technology, preventing competitors from registering related patent technologies and limiting their product design capabilities.

Numerous previous reports suggest that Apple will officially unveil its long-rumored virtual reality headset at WWDC 2023, which is expected to incorporate gestural interaction capabilities. Consequently, the technology described in this patent design may also be featured in the functions of this forthcoming headset.
