Google has officially confirmed the unification of ChromeOS and Android, with Android set to become the primary platform. The first tangible results of this transition are expected to reach users in 2026.
Until now, the company had only hinted at a potential merger, but the official announcement was delivered by Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, during the Qualcomm Summit.
He emphasized that the chief objective is to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence into Android and extend its capabilities to laptops, ensuring seamless interaction across the broader ecosystem. According to Samat, the experience of ChromeOS will be transferred onto Android’s technological foundation.
Chromebooks helped Google establish a solid foothold in the laptop market, particularly in the budget segment favored by schools and students, though the company also released premium models such as the Chromebook Pixel.
Now, however, Google is placing its bet squarely on Android. In an industry rapidly weaving artificial intelligence into every product, Android offers the widest potential for embedding Gemini AI services.
To illustrate these prospects, Samat pointed to Android’s success on tablets and expressed confidence that laptops will represent the next major stage in the ecosystem’s evolution.
A crucial partner in this strategy will be Qualcomm, which is adapting its processors for laptops and ensuring compatibility between chips designed for Windows and the Android platform.
Moreover, Android will pave the way for broader adoption of XR technologies—virtual, augmented, and mixed reality—across a wide array of devices.
As Samat underscored, the unification of ChromeOS and Android is driven above all by the rise of artificial intelligence, which has become the company’s central strategic focus.
