AMD had planned to use the 12VHPWR interface

At the illustrious Gamescom 2023, AMD proudly unveiled the Radeon RX 7800 XT and Radeon RX 7700 XT, both masterfully crafted around the RDNA 3 architecture’s Navi 32 GPU. Their respective Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) have been set at $499 and $449.

In an intimate conversation with the Club386, Scott Herkelman, AMD’s esteemed Senior Vice President and General Manager of Graphics, revealed initial plans to incorporate the 12VHPWR interface into the Radeon RX 7800 XT and Radeon RX 7700 XT graphics cards. However, after a series of contemplative reflections, the decision was made to eschew this novel external power connector, opting instead to persist with the tried-and-true 8-pin power interface.

Herkelman elaborated that even from the early days of the Navi 31-powered Radeon RX 7900 series, up to the Navi 33-harnessed Radeon RX 7600, there had been no inclination towards adopting this new connector. AMD remains unwavering in its commitment to shield consumers from unwarranted risks, ensuring that the gaming community is instilled with unwavering confidence in any new connectors before their incorporation. Should the feedback be overwhelmingly favorable, AMD may revisit the possibility of harnessing the 12VHPWR interface in the future.

The Radeon RX 7800 XT, boasting the robust Navi 32, is equipped with 60 Compute Units (CUs), or 3,840 stream processors. It boasts an Infinity Cache of 64MB, a gaming clock of 2,124MHz, and a boost clock of 2,430MHz, and is paired with an opulent 16GB GDDR6 video memory. With a 256-bit memory bandwidth and a dazzling memory speed of 19.5 Gbps, it operates at a consummate power draw of 263W. In contrast, the Radeon RX 7700 XT, also anchored on the Navi 32 albeit in a streamlined capacity, houses 54 CUs or 3,456 stream processors. The Infinity Cache gracefully retreats to 48MB, a gaming clock of 2,171MHz, a boost clock of 2,544MHz, and 12GB of video memory. Its memory bandwidth narrows to 192 bits, and memory velocity descends to 18 Gbps, all while maintaining a frugal power consumption of 245W. Echoing the heritage of the preceding Radeon RX 7000 series, both marvels come meticulously equipped with a DP 2.1 interface.

The eagerly anticipated Radeon RX 7800 XT and Radeon RX 7700 XT are slated for a grand release on September 6, 2023. These graphic masterpieces will be made available through AMD’s illustrious partners: PowerColor, XFX, Sapphire, ASUS, ASRock, Biostar, Gigabyte, HIS, and Yeston. Concurrently, the Radeon RX 7800 XT will also be gracing the digital shelves of AMD.com from September 6, 2023.
