AMD announces acquisition of AI software company Nod.ai

AMD has announced its acquisition of the open-source artificial intelligence (AI) software enterprise, Nod.ai, in a strategic move to bolster its prowess in open-source AI offerings.

Established in 2013, Nod.ai has been instrumental in furnishing optimized AI solutions primarily for large-scale data center operators and a diverse clientele. Their technological innovations have been seamlessly integrated across cloud platforms, edge computing, and a plethora of terminal devices. While AMD has chosen to remain circumspect about the financial intricacies of this transaction, data suggests that Nod.ai’s current market valuation hovers around $36.5 million.

Vamsi Boppana, AMD’s Senior Vice President of Artificial Intelligence, conveyed that the assimilation of Nod.ai is anticipated to significantly amplify their capability to proffer developmental software tailored for AI clientele. This would further empower clients to effortlessly deploy high-caliber AI models that are meticulously fine-tuned for AMD hardware. With the advent of the Nod.ai development ensemble, AMD’s proficiency in advancing open-source compiler technology is set to witness an enhancement, thereby actualizing portable, high-performance AI solutions within AMD’s product suite.

In a related development this August, AMD assimilated Mipsology, an AI startup based in France. Founded in 2015, Mipsology has been a stalwart collaborator with AMD, perennially crafting AI inference and optimization solutions and tools tailored for them. With the recent acquisition of Nod.ai juxtaposed with that of Mipsology, it is evident that AMD is aggressively channeling investments into the AI software domain, seeking to narrow the competitive gap with rivals such as NVIDIA.

Dr. Lisa Su, AMD’s Chief Executive Officer, has previously intimated that she envisions an exponential surge in AI over the forthcoming decade. She posits that within a span of 3 to 5 years, the market magnitude for related products might escalate to an estimated $150 billion. AMD has strategically prioritized AI as the paramount domain for resource allocation and investments, and concurrently, all future AMD products are slated to be imbued with AI technology.
