Unleash Single-Chip AI: AMD’s Versal Gen 2 Arrives

Recently, AMD announced the expansion of its Versal adaptive SoC product lineup with the introduction of the second generation of Versal AI Edge series and Versal Prime series adaptive SoCs. The newly unveiled high-performance, edge-optimized products integrate preprocessing, AI inference, and postprocessing within a single device, offering end-to-end acceleration for AI-driven embedded systems.

“The demand for AI-enabled embedded applications is exploding and driving the need for single-chip solutions for the most efficient end-to-end acceleration within the power and area constraints of embedded systems,” said Salil Raje, senior vice president and general manager, Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group, AMD. “Backed by over 40 years of adaptive computing leadership, these latest generation Versal devices bring together multiple compute engines on a single architecture offering high compute efficiency and performance with scalability from the low-end to high-end.”

Versal Series Gen 2

According to AMD, the inaugural devices within the second-generation Versal series portfolio are built upon the foundation of the first generation, featuring powerful new AI engines. They are expected to achieve up to three times the performance per watt TOPS compared to the first generation Versal AI Edge series, while the newly integrated high-performance Arm CPUs are anticipated to provide up to ten times the scalar compute power of the first-generation Versal AI Edge and Versal Prime series. The new products balance performance, power consumption, board space, and advanced functional and information security, offering new capabilities and features that support applications across automotive, industrial, vision, medical, broadcast, and professional audio/video markets.

Subaru has chosen the second generation Versal AI Edge series for its next-generation advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) vision system named “EyeSight.”
