Starlink will launch Direct to Cell, a satellite communication service
SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, has announced the launch of its authorized satellite communication service, operating under the moniker “Direct to Cell”. Slated to become operational in 2024, it aims to offer text messaging, voice calling, and internet transmission services, making it accessible to all smartphones with LTE network capabilities.
However, in its inaugural year of 2024, the service will initially offer only text transmission capabilities. Comprehensive features such as voice and internet transmission, as well as Internet of Things (IoT) related connectivity applications, are anticipated to be sequentially introduced by 2025.
This service emerges from a collaboration announced last August with T-Mobile. The partnership entails T-Mobile allocating a portion of its 5G network spectrum for Starlink’s second-generation low-Earth orbit satellite connectivity. In reciprocation, Starlink will permit smartphones using T-Mobile’s LTE network technology to directly access satellite connection signals. Furthermore, Starlink underscores that its service has the capacity to virtually cover the entire U.S. service range.
Leveraging its satellite connectivity advantage, Starlink posits that this service will be unfettered by geographical constraints and traditional base station infrastructure costs. As long as the satellite connection signal is receivable, text messages can be sent. The vision extends to encompass voice calls, internet access, and fulfilling a broader spectrum of IoT connectivity requirements.
Given the varying specifications needed to cater to mobile internet usage, Starlink plans to launch an array of new micro-connectivity satellites in the coming years to enhance mobile connectivity capabilities. Satellites designed for general internet access needs will continue to serve their purpose.
Following Apple’s integration of satellite distress call functions in its iPhone 14 series, many phones in the market have commenced the incorporation of similar features. This has intensified competition in this niche sector. Market analysts project an increasing prominence of internet connectivity through satellites, foreseeing its integration into forthcoming 6G mobile network specifications, and marking its transition into mainstream technology.
