Peek Bigger, See Better: Apple Watch Ultra Goes Micro-LED

Recently, TrendForce published an article stating that Apple is developing a new model of the Apple Watch Ultra, featuring a Micro-LED display panel. This panel will measure 2.21 inches, representing a 10% increase in screen size compared to the current models.

The article reveals that the suppliers for the new Apple Watch Ultra include the German company ams OSRAM and the South Korean firm LG. In terms of cost control, despite Apple’s strong bargaining power in the supply chain, the cost of the Micro-LED display panel is expected to be 2.5 to 3 times higher than the current OLED panels. Nevertheless, TrendForce maintains an optimistic view regarding Apple’s adoption of Micro-LED displays. The media outlet believes that thanks to Apple’s exceptional ability to integrate new technologies and specifications, the new Apple Watch Ultra could surpass one million shipments in its first year on the market, significantly propelling the development of the Micro-LED display panel industry.

This is not the first time that Apple’s plans to use Micro-LED displays have been reported. On January 13 of this year, analyst Ross Young shared news about LG constructing a production line for Micro-LED display panels for Apple. According to an article by wccftech, Apple’s Micro-LED displays, compared to the current OLED panels, will offer higher brightness, enhanced color reproduction, greater color saturation, and improved viewing angles, along with superior energy efficiency. This implies that the new Apple Watch Ultra will have improved battery life. Moreover, the 10% increase in the display area for the new Apple Watch Ultra suggests a potential redesign of the device’s body.

However, the release date of the new Apple Watch Ultra remains speculative. Ross Young predicts a 2025 launch, while TrendForce anticipates it will hit the market in 2026.
