iPhone 15 Pro teardown is easier to repair than previous generation

In a bid to reduce the complexity and cost of repairs, rumors have emerged suggesting that Apple has reengineered the internal architecture of the iPhone 15 Pro. Lending credence to these whispers, the YouTube content creator PBKreviews unveiled a teardown video of the iPhone 15 Pro today.

From the footage, it becomes evident upon dismantling the iPhone 15 Pro’s screen that its mid-frame structure has been revisited, though the overarching internal layout remains reminiscent of the iPhone 14 Pro. According to PBKreviews, disassembling the iPhone 15 Pro’s rear glass panel proves relatively straightforward, requiring but a triad of steps: warming the back panel, lifting the glass, and subsequently disconnecting the ribbon cables attached to the mainboard.

Moreover, upon prying open the back, one can discern components such as a 3274mAh battery, MagSafe charging coils, LED flash, microphone, and other circuitry elements. Notably, the battery capacity aligns perfectly with previously disclosed regulatory data. Perhaps in the interest of discretion, one distinction between the iPhone 15 Pro and its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro, is the conspicuous absence of any brand or model inscriptions on the aluminum cover of the A17 Pro chip.

Concluding the video, PBKreviews bestows a commendable repairability score upon the iPhone 15 Pro, noting that, in theory, this iteration surpasses its forebears in ease of maintenance—a testament to the internal enhancements Apple has made. However, some comments interspersed in the video underscore caution for avid Apple users. They opine that the practicality of users attempting self-repairs on the iPhone 15 Pro remains tenuous at best. Since the advent of the iPhone 11 series in 2019, Apple has incorporated a hardware authentication mechanism, rendering iPhones inoperative should they be fitted with non-officially certified components.

As of now, the iPhone 15 lineup is progressively reaching its eager customers, with Apple’s brick-and-mortar stores launching the series today, September 22, 2023.
