Apple plans to unveil a foldable iPad device

Over the past two years, persistent reports have suggested Apple’s enthusiastic exploration into the feasibility of a foldable MacBook, even engaging in discussions with suppliers, potentially inaugurating a new product line. Apple’s interest in foldable projects appears not to be confined to laptops or smartphones; tablet computers also constitute a target.

As reported by Wccftech, Apple plans to unveil a series of novel foldable devices, with the iPad being one of the objectives, though the timeline for their release remains nebulous.

Currently, Apple employs mini LED technology in its iPad Pro series. The introduction of a foldable model would necessitate the use of flexible OLED panels, as these allow bending without compromising structural integrity. Indeed, Apple is planning to incorporate an OLED screen into its new iPad Pro, slated for a 2024 release, to deliver enhanced display quality, such as deeper blacks and superior color accuracy. However, the advent of a foldable model could be several years away.

Apple primarily procures its iPad panels from Samsung and LG, with Samsung also boasting its own tablet computer product line. As Samsung has yet to unveil a foldable Galaxy Tab model, it seems improbable for Apple to launch a foldable iPad model ahead of Samsung. Besides, Apple imposes a higher standard on product design; if the creases are notably visible, they likely would not be deemed acceptable.

After several years of diligence, the market now features an increased number of foldable smartphones in terms of design and model quantity, demonstrating the matured technological application. Nevertheless, Apple’s years of research have yet to result in market deployment, suggesting a considerable wait might be necessary before commercialized products become available. This timeline may be even more protracted for larger screen foldable tablets.
