Remnant II did not perform well on the console

“Remnant II,” developed by Gunfire Games and published by Gearbox, serves as the sequel to “Remnant: From the Ashes.” Released on July 26 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, this game, built on the Unreal Engine 5, is one of the few currently available titles leveraging this new engine. However, reports from Wccftech citing Digital Foundry‘s tests reveal the game’s performance on consoles is somewhat lackluster.

Both the Xbox Series X and PS5 offer three modes for “Remnant II”: a quality mode at 30 fps, a balanced mode at 60 fps, and a performance mode. All three modes stretch to 2K (1440p) in terms of resolution, but the rendering resolutions differ. The quality mode revolves around 1296p, while the balanced mode averages at 792p, and the performance mode sits at just 720p. In terms of frame rate, except for the stable 30 fps in the quality mode, the balanced mode only occasionally hits the 60 fps target, sometimes dropping to around 30 fps. The performance mode, by comparison, isn’t particularly impressive and even exhibits substantial screen tearing. Therefore, surprisingly, the 30 fps quality mode offers the best overall performance.

Moreover, Digital Foundry tested the game on the less powerful Xbox Series S console, which provides only a single mode, running at 900p at 30 fps.

Throughout the tests, the performance of Xbox Series X and PS5 didn’t present any noticeable disparity. However, regarding the frame rate, the Xbox Series X allows for an uncapped frame rate in the game’s performance mode with the console set to 120Hz mode, while the PS5 locks the frame rate at a maximum of 60 fps even in performance mode. Certainly, under the optimization of “Remnant II,” choosing a higher or more stable frame rate becomes a matter of personal preference.

While the Nanite technology of Unreal Engine 5 does indeed augment the visuals of “Remnant II,” it evidently exerts significant pressure on the current-generation consoles. It’s noteworthy that both the Xbox Series X and PS5 initially aimed for 4K at 60 fps when they were first launched.
