Youtuber uses RTX 4090 graphic card in gaming laptop

NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 graphics card has been sold for more than half a month. It is said that if you want to buy it now, you will have to increase the price, and the RTX 4080 will also be listed in the middle of this month. However, for game players, the RTX 40 series notebook GPU should not be launched until early next year. At this stage, it is not impossible to make laptops use RTX 4090. Players should have thought of the Thunderbolt external graphics dock. Recently, Jarrod’sTech has really done this test.

As we all know, at present, whether it is the bandwidth limitation of Thunderbolt 3/4 technology when used with a graphics card, part of the performance of the GPU itself will be lost, especially the stronger the GPU, the more performance will be lost. Jarrod’sTech used an RTX 4090 FE graphics card, plugged it into the Thunderbolt external graphics dock, and then connected it to the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED (equipped with a 12th-generation Core i7-126P), and ran some tests. Later, it was found that the performance of the RTX 4090 was only used half, and the game results under 2K and 1080p were not as good as the RTX 3070 Ti notebook GPU.

The worst thing is that in Watch Dogs Legion 4K, compared to the desktop platform of the Ryzen 9 7950X, the notebook will lose 82% of the performance by connecting an external RTX 4090 through Thunderbolt. However, under 4K, the gap between the two will not be that big, but to go to 1080p resolution, it is a huge difference, and if you switch to a gaming laptop equipped with i9-12900HX, the result will be Slightly better, but the overall problem is not solved. After all, the CPU performance of the Core i7-126P is not weak.

However, even with such little performance as the RTX 4090, a thin and light notebook like the Zenbook 14 OLED can play most of the current 3A masterpieces at 4K resolution. When NVIDIA launches a more mainstream RTX 40 series graphics card, it may be more worthy to be used with a Thunderbolt graphics card dock. Of course, the biggest problem at present is Thunderbolt technology. Intel will have a higher 120Gbps bandwidth until the next generation of Thunderbolt.
