Threads amassed an extraordinary 100 million registered users in a mere five days

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has been ceaselessly announcing new milestones on Threads recently: 5 million registrations in 4 hours; 10 million in 7 hours; 30 million in 24 hours; 70 million in 48 hours. Threads, dubbed as Twitter’s most formidable rival, made an astonishing debut, posing a palpable threat to Elon Musk.

According to The Verge, Threads amassed an extraordinary 100 million registered users in a mere five days, vastly exceeding expectations and outpacing even OpenAI’s generative chatbot, ChatGPT, which took two months to reach the same number, and this feat was achieved with minimal marketing efforts. Comparatively, TikTok, another hugely popular application, took nine months to breach the 100-million mark, while Instagram took a staggering two and a half years to achieve the same milestone.

Data is interchangeable between Threads and Instagram; users can directly log into the former with the latter’s account, choosing to import their data with a single click. As per Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, Meta does not aim to supersede Twitter with Threads. As Meta’s recent spearhead, Threads has already launched in over 100 countries and regions’ Apple and Android app stores. However, due to considerations regarding EU privacy regulations, Threads has delayed its European debut.

Elon Musk has criticized Threads, threatening legal action against the platform. His lawyers accused Meta of “illicitly pilfering” his trade secrets in a formal letter. Recently, Musk and Zuckerberg have been embroiled in a virtual exchange of barbs, which has given rise to a string of rather lurid comments, inciting fervent discussions amongst netizens.
