Seagate begins selling 22TB HDDs to some customers

Solid-state drives are used to improve the read and write speeds, while traditional mechanical hard drives focus on large-capacity improvements, and storage prices are much cheaper than new solid-state drives. At present, the maximum capacity of mechanical hard drives that consumers can buy in the consumer sector is 20TB, including the Seagate IronWolf Pro series and Western Digital’s disk series. However, Seagate has begun to sell mechanical hard drives with a capacity of up to 22TB to certain industry customers. These mechanical hard drives use CMR or traditional magnetic recording technology.

The application requirements of large-capacity mechanical hard disks in the enterprise field are still very large. For example, a large amount of hard disk storage services and user data are required in data centers. Enterprises also need to use large-capacity mechanical hard disks to store key enterprise data. With the explosive growth of data, enterprises’ requirements for hard disk capacity are also increasing.

Seagate said in its earnings conference that the company has begun to sell 22TB mechanical hard drives to some customers in specific industries, but detailed data on such hard drives have not been released. These ultra-high-capacity mechanical hard drives have not yet been launched for all enterprises, and consumers will naturally not be able to buy them, and Seagate has not stated when they will be widely shipped.

According to Seagate’s previous instructions, the company plans to achieve 30TB mechanical hard drives in 2023, 50TB by 2026, and 100TB by 2030. So if it goes well, larger-capacity mechanical hard drives will arrive next year, and the price of mechanical hard drives above 20TB may also be slightly lower and easier to buy.
