Phison announces its first PCIe 5.0 SSD: start production in the second half of 2022

Intel will launch PCIe 5.0 at the same time as the Alder Lake processor is launched this year. When AMD first released PCIe 4.0 two years ago, it actually had PCIe 4.0 graphics cards, and also pulled on Phison’s first PCIe 4.0 SSD. Now Phison has just announced their first PCIe 5.0 – E26.

Phison E26 is prepared for server and high-end client SSD. Built with a 12nm process, it will be based on the Arm Cortex-R5 core and will support the upcoming 3D NAND flash memory with ONFI 5.x and Toggle 5.x interfaces, with a data transfer rate of up to 2400 MT/s, support Phison’s exclusive CoXProcessor 2.0 architecture, and support PCIe Dual Port, SR-IOV, and ZNS functions. It can provide customers with high performance and low power consumption and can be customized flexibly, suitable for data centers, cloud servers, edge computing systems, and e-sports markets.

Phison stated that they have completed the tape-out of the E26 master controller, and then they need to test and write the firmware. Fortunately, mass production will begin in the second half of 2022. In the early stage, various specifications such as M.2, U.3, E1.S, and E3.S will be launched. At present, Phison has not announced the performance specifications of this master controller. In theory, the bandwidth of PCI-E 5.0 x4 can reach 14GB/ s, but I don’t know if E26 can run full.
