Next-Gen Vision Pro Aims for Immersive “Silicon Display” Feast

Apple’s Vision Pro is heralded as one of the most exhilarating devices set for release next year. Reports from Wccftech and The Elec indicate that Apple has already commenced the development of the second-generation Vision Pro, with a significant focus on enhancing the display panel.

According to The Elec, the next-generation Vision Pro from Apple will feature an OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) panel. This technology, a fusion of OLED with a silicon base, is integrated with CMOS processes, allowing for ultra-high resolutions on small-sized panels. It also offers a wide field of view (FOV) with superior brightness, contrast, and energy efficiency, making it an ideal panel type for XR devices. Currently, manufacturers like LG Display and Samsung Display in South Korea, as well as Visionox Technology in China, are developing OLEDoS panels.

The soon-to-be-released inaugural Vision Pro employs a WOLED panel supplied by Sony. We have previously reported on how Sony’s production capacity has constrained the output of the Vision Pro. It is also worth mentioning that LG is the supplier of the external OLED panels.

While OLEDoS does present advantages, the second-generation Vision Pro is not expected to arrive soon. The Elec suggests that the OLEDoS-equipped Vision Pro is likely to debut in 2027. Until then, Apple plans to continue using WOLED panels in its updated products, such as the rumored lower-specification, more affordable variant of the Vision Pro. However, considering that 2027 is a distant timeline and that there are currently few manufacturers capable of mass-producing OLEDoS, Apple might decide to alter its plans. Therefore, it is advisable to approach this news with a degree of caution.
