Nanya Technology invested $10.1 billion to build a new fab

Nanya Technology is a dynamic random access memory (DRAM) manufacturer under the Formosa Plastics Group, ranking fourth in the world after Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. According to UDN, Nanya Technology recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new 12-inch wafer fab in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

The project is Nanya Technology’s largest investment in the past decade, with a total investment of US$10.1 billion. Compared with TSMC’s tens of billions of dollars in investment, Nanya Technology’s investment is much smaller, but the DRAM manufacturing node is not the same as TSMC’s foundry chips, and it is not as easy to benefit from more advanced processes as ordinary chips. Nanya Technology’s new fab is located close to one of its current fabs and is expected to start production in 2025, with a monthly production capacity of about 45,000 wafers.
It is said that Nanya Technology’s new fab will use the 10nm technology node, although this may change with usage. Nanya Technology currently has DDR5 products using 10nm-level technology and is mass-producing it as planned. Unlike other competitors that mostly focus on 16 Gbit chips, Nanya Technology seems to still be focusing on lower capacity 8 Gbit chips. Nanya Technology aims to develop its next-generation 10nm-class process independently of other DRAM manufacturers to avoid paying patent licensing fees to competitors.
