Microsoft is reportedly designing its own chips for servers and Surface

Microsoft is independently designing chips for servers running the company’s cloud services, joining the trend of reducing dependence on Intel.

The person familiar with the situation said that the world’s largest software company is passing ARM Ltd to esign a processor for the data center. The company is also considering another chip for the Surface series of personal computers.

This is a major strategic move by Microsoft, striving to be self-sufficient in the most important hardware. Colleagues in the cloud computing field, such as Amazon, have already begun to develop chips independently. They believe that their own chips are more suitable for certain needs and have more cost and performance advantages than ready-made chips mainly provided by Intel.

A person familiar with the matter said that Microsoft’s efforts are more likely to bring a server chip than a Surface computer chip, but the latter is also possible. “Because silicon is a foundational building block for technology, we’re continuing to invest in our own capabilities in areas like design, manufacturing and tools, while also fostering and strengthening partnerships with a wide range of chip providers,” says Microsoft’s communications chief Frank Shaw.
