Google removed “Updates for Samsung” app from Play Store

Last week, a report from the CSIS security team noted that there are a fake “Updates for Samsung” app on the Google Play Store. After the media exposure, Google said that the application has been suspended due to policy violations, but it is currently unclear which part of the terms are based on how the company found anomalies.

fake Samsung firmware update app

Last week, application developer Updato told BleepingComputer that although the app claimed to provide users with some convenience, it was crusted because of “remove the firmware service portion and non-Google payments.” Google said in a statement:

“Providing a safe and secure experience is a top priority and our Google Play developer policies strictly prohibit apps that are deceptive, malicious, or intended to abuse or misuse any network, device, or personal data. When violations are found, we take action.”

However, according to the counter of the Play Store, the app has been downloaded more than 10 million times before being taken off the shelf. Judging from the four-star rating, this trick is quite brilliant. Technically, this app is not malware in the traditional sense, but a fraudulent software. Fortunately, it is now finally removed from the Google Play Store.
