Global PC shipments increased by 3% in 2024Q1

Recently, the market research firm IDC released the Global PC Shipment Tracking Report for the first quarter of 2024, which revealed that the global PC market has returned to growth after two years of decline, registering a 1.5% increase compared to the first quarter of 2023, and has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. Subsequently, another market research firm, Counterpoint Research, provided data reflecting the same trend, showing a growth of approximately 3% compared to the first quarter of 2023, thereby ending a consecutive eight-quarter decline.

Counterpoint Research noted that the momentum in the PC market is primarily driven by the surge in AI-powered PCs, a recovery in PC shipments across various sectors, and the arrival of the replacement cycle for devices. Lenovo continued to lead without suspense, with its shipments growing by 8% year-over-year, and its market share increasing from 23% in the first quarter of 2023 to 24%; HP and Dell maintained their market shares at 21% and 16% respectively, consistent with the previous year, with anticipated growth in shipments over the coming quarters primarily originating from North America; Apple’s shipments also showed resilience, primarily driven by the basic models of Mac equipped with the M3 chip.

Counterpoint Research predicts that 2024 marks the first chapter for AI PCs, estimating that 45% of the new laptops shipped this year will feature AI capabilities, catalyzing overall PC shipments this year. Between 2025 and 2026, the emergence of generative AI features and use cases is expected to accelerate, which will also speed up the shipment and deployment of related AI PCs.
