Firefox Fission will prevents Spectre-style exploits

To help users defend against side-channel attacks such as Spectre and Meltdown, Firefox web browser developer Mozilla has decided to launch a big project called Project Fission this month. The processor security vulnerabilities exposed last year have caused great shock to the internet. On Monday, Firefox platform engineer Nika Layzell said in a blog post that Fission has been brewing for many months and will arrive at first milestone later this month.

Firefox will disable all legacy add-ons

Layzell said,

We aim to build a browser which isn’t just secure against known security vulnerabilities, but also has layers of built-in defense against potential future vulnerabilities. Fission is a massive project.

Spectre-style attacks can be used to steal highly sensitive data (passwords or encryption keys), and Web browsers running on processors, and even the operating system itself, face the same risks. The Fission project changed the architecture of the Firefox browser to make it more secure and resilient. Mozilla is defining early projects, and interested developers can keep an eye on the follow-up Milestone.
