Apple may add fingerprint scanning under the screen and Touch ID to the iPhone power button

For many users, in recent years, many models of the Apple iPhone series have adopted Face ID face recognition technology instead of Touch ID fingerprint module, which makes them very distressed. Especially in the coronavirus epidemic, sometimes Touch ID will be more convenient to use. A few months ago, news pointed out that Apple has obtained a new patent, involving the under-screen fingerprint scanning technology developed by the new generation of iPhone, which may appear in future iPhones.

According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, Apple’s new patent is titled “Under-display fingerprint sensing based on off-axis angular light”, which details the use of light instead of ultrasonic vibration to sense fingerprints. Compared with some Android phones that use optical fingerprint sensors for unlocking and identity verification, Apple’s system that captures off-axis angle light can read fingerprint information more effectively and maintains the compactness of the entire sensing system.

However, there seems to be more than one way for Apple to consider the new Touch ID implementation on the iPhone. Recently PatentlyApple discovered a new patent from Apple. In the future, it may add a Touch ID fingerprint module to the iPhone’s power button or other side buttons, similar to the iPad Air 4 launched in 2020. In fact, it has long been reported that Apple intends to make iPhone SE use the same Touch ID and power button functions as iPad Air 4, and it may be used on the new iPhone SE launched in 2022.
