Apple is rumored to be testing “Apple GPT” internally

Over the past several months, artificial intelligence (AI) tools, led primarily by ChatGPT, have sparked a global fervor. Numerous technology companies are riding this wave, investing significantly in AI projects. As a titan in the tech industry, Apple’s every move is under intense scrutiny, leading many to speculate about possible new developments in the AI domain.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has constructed its own framework for crafting multi-modal large-scale language models, referred to as “Ajax”. On this foundation, a chatbot service, dubbed “Apple GPT” by some engineers, has also been created. Rumor has it that Apple began developing “Ajax” in 2022, built on Google Jax, and run on Google Cloud with the aim of unifying its machine learning development. The chatbot service, however, is a recent innovation.

Throughout this AI wave, Apple has maintained an unwavering silence. The previous Worldwide Developers Conference lacked any mention of AI, offering no clear strategy, only addressing advances in machine learning. Reports suggest that Apple feels uneasy about the pace at which generative AI tools are becoming mainstream and worries about “missing a potentially significant shift in how devices operate”. It is understood that some AI improvements based on Ajax have already been observed in Apple’s maps, search, and Siri.

In terms of incorporating AI technology, Apple’s pace appears to lag behind contemporaries such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. Apple demonstrates a reticence towards public testing, preferring to wait until technology matures before unveiling polished and comprehensive products.
