Apple cuts OLED panel orders for new iPad Pro

Apple plans to launch OLED versions of the iPad Pro this year, available in both 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes, equipped with the M3 processor and supporting LTPO screen technology. These will also be the first of their kind to employ tandem stack technology for OLEDs. Previous reports indicated that the OLED displays for the iPad Pro models had entered the production phase, with the new products expected to ship in April.

According to a supply chain report cited by Wccftech, Apple has reduced its orders for OLED panels for the new iPad Pro, including other components, suggesting that demand may be below initial expectations. This adjustment is poised to impact partners such as TSMC, Foxconn, LG, and Novatek. Initially, Apple ordered approximately 10 million units of 11-inch and 12.9-inch OLED panels combined, but this figure has now been reduced to between 7 million and 8 million units.

LG is reported to have faced the largest cut among all suppliers, with its OLED panel orders potentially halved from 6 million units to 3 million. Conversely, Samsung’s order quantity remains unaffected, maintaining around 4 million units. Industry insiders suggest that Apple’s decision stems from a cautious approach to initial demand expectations.

Furthermore, a recent code from iPadOS 17.4 indicates that the OLED iPad Pro models might come equipped with a horizontal Face ID camera, offering a more natural user experience. Although pricing for the OLED iPad Pro models has not been determined, the inclusion of numerous new technologies is likely to make them more expensive than current offerings, which could also impact sales.
