Alphabet’s drone company Wing partners with Walmart to provide drone delivery service in the Texas metro area

Alphabet’s drone subsidiary, Wing, is currently collaborating with Walmart to initiate drone delivery services in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

This service is anticipated to commence from a Walmart superstore located in Frisco within the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan vicinity. It is projected to offer delivery of assorted household groceries, daily necessities, and over-the-counter medications to users within a radius of 6 miles (approximately 9.66 kilometers). With the capability to deliver at speeds of up to 65 miles per hour (approximately 104.61 kilometers), customers can expect to receive their orders within roughly half an hour. Furthermore, Wing underscores its capacity to deliver challenging items such as eggs and frozen foods, signifying confidence in the reliability and speed of its drone delivery services.

The delivery process will be entirely automated, with remote monitoring available to ensure that delivery tasks are completed accurately. There is no necessity for staff to be stationed at Walmart or to physically verify that the goods have been delivered correctly. The entire aerial delivery procedure will be autonomously executed by the drones.

Prior to this, Wing had already launched delivery services in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in April 2022, also partnering with chain pharmacy and grocery retailer Walgreens. This new collaboration with Walmart indicates an expansion of its service application.

As for Walmart, in addition to partnering with Wing, they initiated their own DroneUp drone delivery service in 2022. This covered regions such as Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Utah, and Virginia, catering to roughly 4 million households. However, earlier this year, they dismissed up to 418 employees. The recent announcement of a collaboration with Wing perhaps suggests a desire to reduce internal expenditures on technological development.
