The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom had sold 18.5 million copies

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s” sequel, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” the fifteenth main installment of the series, was released on May 12, 2023, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch platform.

Owing to the monumental success of “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” its sequel has remained one of the most highly anticipated games among players over the past several years. “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” lived up to expectations upon its formal release, garnering unanimous acclaim from gamers. Recently, Nintendo unveiled its financial report for the first quarter of 2023, revealing that as of June 30, 2023, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” had sold 18.5 million copies, an impressive achievement in approximately a month and a half since its launch.

Previously, Nintendo had announced that within the first three days after its release, sales of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” had exceeded ten million copies, making it the fastest-selling game in the “The Legend of Zelda” series. Considering the industry and gamers’ superlative praise for “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” such a feat was not surprising. It is worth noting that some players have accessed the game on PCs through emulators, which might have otherwise contributed to even better sales figures.

In the same financial report, Nintendo also stated that the total sales of the Nintendo Switch had reached 129.53 million units, with 3.91 million sold in the previous quarter. Evidently, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” played a considerable role in boosting the console’s sales. Furthermore, the success of the “Super Mario Bros.” movie has propelled the sales of Mario games, such as “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe,” which sold an additional 1.67 million copies last quarter, bringing the total sales to 55.46 million copies.
