  • AMD FSR 2.0 is about to land on the Xbox platform

Recently, AMD celebrated the one-year anniversary of the release of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology and made the just-launched FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 open source. The total number of games currently supporting version 2.0 has reached 22. AMD has confirmed that the FSR 2.0 API will also be available through the Xbox Game Development Kit.

Jason Ronald, director of program management at Xbox, said on his Twitter accounts that FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 will soon be coming to the Xbox platform, and the Xbox team has received an upgrade from AMD and is actively testing it for in-game use. It is understood that the Xbox game consoles that FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 will support include the Xbox Series X/S and the previous generation of the Xbox One series.

Surprisingly, FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 not only supports the Xbox Series X/S but also the older Xbox One series. According to AMD, the optimal enabling levels for 4K / 2K / FHD resolutions are Radeon RX 6700 XT, Radeon RX 6600, and Radeon RX 6500 XT, respectively. Such a requirement isn’t low, and it’s unclear how the Xbox One’s GPU handles it.
Since game consoles generally have a long life cycle, technologies like FidelityFX Super Resolution are ideal to use on them to ensure that the console’s GPU can run new games for a few years. For the time being, it is uncertain how FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 performs on game consoles and what advantages it will have over other algorithms.
  • AMD FSR 2.0 plugin is already available for Unreal Engine 4 & 5

Recently, AMD celebrated the one-year anniversary of its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology and made the just-launched FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 open source. Jason Ronald, director of project management at Xbox, said that FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 will soon enter the Xbox platform (Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One series) and is currently in beta.

AMD said that there are currently more than 110 games supporting FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, of which the number of games supporting FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 has increased to 22. However, in the eyes of many players, the promotion of FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 is not as fast as expected.

GPUOpen announced recently that plugins for Unreal Engine are now available for download, including Unreal Engine 4.26/4.27 and Unreal Engine 5. It is believed that the new plug-in can speed up the popularization of FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 and be adopted by more games.

Compared to FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0, the new FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 has higher requirements for graphics cards, and the new version is said to include anti-aliasing, which can provide better image quality, while players’ old graphics cards can still benefit from higher frame rates.

Currently, both Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5 support NVIDIA’s DLSS technology, and it may become a trend for more games to support both DLSS 2.x and FSR 2.0 in the future. AMD has stated that if the game already supports DLSS, integrating FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 will only take three days of work. Of course, it may take more than three days for game developers to actually add and optimize, but at least it shows that all DLSS supporters have the possibility of joining FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0.
