Sony’s Innovative Module: Electromagnetic Noise to Power IoT
Sony’s Semiconductor Solutions has unveiled a module designed to harvest electromagnetic noise energy, subsequently converting it into power suitable for energizing low-energy Internet of Things (IoT) devices or for recharging purposes.
This innovative module is adept at harnessing the electromagnetic interference emitted from a plethora of electronic devices, including household appliances, PCs, lighting fixtures, vending machines, elevators, vehicles, and industrial machinery. Through an efficient rectifying circuit and utilizing the metal components of these devices as transmission antennas, the module can transform electromagnetic noise-spanning frequencies from mere hertz to 100MHz into usable electricity. This offers a sustainable source of energy for low-energy IoT devices and ensures consistent power supplementation for battery-operated devices within the same category.
Such groundbreaking technology underscores Sony’s commitment to sustainable development, positioning it as a cornerstone for future IoT applications, and serves as a means to effectively repurpose electromagnetic interference.
The module itself is meticulously crafted with a minimalist design, occupying a mere 7mm², thereby minimizing internal space requirements in IoT devices. Its versatile nature lends itself to a vast array of settings, from manufacturing lines and offices to retail spaces and residential environments. This facilitates the continuous operation of a myriad of low-energy IoT devices by converting electromagnetic noise into power and simultaneously reduces the complexities involved in the deployment of IoT infrastructures.
Beyond its primary function of power provisioning, this technology can be instrumental in monitoring the seamless operation of IoT devices. For instance, voltage fluctuations can be used to ascertain the functional status of lighting fixtures, streamlining the task for maintenance personnel in determining the need for repairs or adjustments.
With a vision to bolster the advancement of IoT applications through this technology, Sony also seeks collaborative ventures with a broader spectrum of industry stakeholders.
