CDPR confirms the start of development of the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077

On September 26, 2023, CD Projekt Red released the “Phantom Liberty” DLC for “Cyberpunk 2077”, making its debut on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms including Steam, GOG, and Epic. This DLC achieved a remarkable sales milestone, surpassing five million copies during the year. Alongside this, CD Projekt Red also introduced a complimentary update, “Cyberpunk 2077” version 2.0, which significantly overhauled numerous gameplay mechanics and core game functionalities. This update, enriched with various fixes and enhancements, was a testament to their dedication and commitment to the game.

Recently, Igor Sarzyński, the narrative director for “Cyberpunk 2077”, shared on social media his excitement about his first day at the office in Boston, Massachusetts. He expressed his joy in reuniting with old friends and officially embarking on the “Orion” project journey. Sarzyński conveyed great enthusiasm for this venture, believing it has the potential to evolve into something extraordinary, with “Cyberpunk 2077” serving merely as the preamble.

The Boston studio of CD Projekt Red is a new establishment, operating independently from another studio on the East Coast. During an event for investors, CD Projekt Red revealed details about the “Orion” project, stating that the sequel to “Cyberpunk 2077” is in the “conceptual design” phase. This implies that it might be several years before it reaches the gaming community. The sequel to “Cyberpunk 2077” will continue to be developed by the original team. It is rumored that the “Orion” project is a collaborative effort among studios located in Vancouver, Boston, and Poland, with half the development team based in Poland and the other half overseas.

Media outlets and gamers have lauded the “Phantom Liberty” DLC for “Cyberpunk 2077“, acknowledging that the wait was well worth it. CD Projekt Red revealed that approximately 23% of players who purchased the base game also bought the DLC within three months of its release, a figure slightly higher than the 22% DLC purchase rate for “The Witcher 3”.
