ARM will abandon support for 32-bit in 2022
At present, mainstream operating systems are transitioning from 32-bit to 64-bit, because the 64-bit architecture is relatively better than the 32-bit version, so upgrading is inevitable.
But the transition requires not only the support of software developers but also hardware developers, that is, the software can use 64-bit only when the processor itself supports 64-bit.
32-bit processors are rarely seen on desktop platforms, and mobile platforms are actively transitioning over the years. For example, most new smartphones are 64-bit processors.
It is also true that chip developer ARM believes that it is no longer necessary to support 32-bit processors in smartphones, and will only support 64-bit processors in the future.
After all, high-performance processors are usually equipped with relatively high memory and software is gradually transitioning to 64-bit, so continuing to provide 32-bit processors may affect the use.
ARM may adopt this change from next year, and a small part of the chip area should be freed up to improve processor performance or heat dissipation.
However, low-power chips will continue to support 32-bit. For low-power chips, reducing power consumption and increasing battery life is the most important, and the performance requirements are not high.
Therefore, those low-power chips suitable for IoT devices will continue to allow the use of 32-bit processors, and it is estimated that this situation will not change for a long time in the future.
