AMD Instinct MI300 series is divided into three versions

AMD’s new generation of Instinct MI300 series computational accelerator cards is poised for release. In previous official announcements, it was conveyed that there will be at least two products to choose from, namely the Instinct MI300A (CPU+GPU) and Instinct MI300X (GPU only).

According to a report by Coelacanth Dream, a recent exposure of a Linux patch also revealed a new product named “Instinct MI300C.” It’s understood that this is the CPU-only version within the Instinct MI300 series, equivalent to an EPYC Genoa processor paired with HBM3, equipped with 96 Zen 4 architecture cores and 128GB of HBM3. Since AMD has not yet publicly disclosed this product, its positioning remains unclear. Its likely competitor would be Intel’s Xeon Max with the code name Sapphire Rapids-HBM, which includes 64GB of HBM2e.

Based on existing information, the Instinct MI300 series products may include:

– Instinct MI300A (CPU+GPU) – 6 XCDs (up to 228 CUs / CDNA 3 architecture), 3 CCDs (up to 24 cores / Zen 4 architecture), 8 HBM3 stacks (totaling 128GB)
– Instinct MI300X (GPU only) – 8 XCDs (up to 304 CUs / CDNA 3 architecture), 0 CCDs (up to 0 cores / Zen 4 architecture), 8 HBM3 stacks (totaling 192GB)
– Instinct MI300C (CPU only) – 0 XCDs (up to 0 CUs / CDNA 3 architecture), 12 CCDs (up to 96 cores / Zen 4 architecture), 8 HBM3 stacks (totaling 128GB)
– Instinct MI300P (GPU only) – 4 XCDs (up to 152 CUs / CDNA 3 architecture), 0 CCDs (up to 0 cores / Zen 4 architecture), 8 HBM3 stacks (totaling 64GB)

A few days ago, AMD announced its second-quarter financial report for 2023, achieving results that surpassed market expectations. In the subsequent earnings call, AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, emphasized the importance of the data center product line for accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. Moreover, AMD may follow the lead of Nvidia and Intel by circumventing relevant export restrictions through customized products, seeking opportunities to provide corresponding AI solutions to Chinese customers, and essentially creating market-specific products for China.
