AMD has become the second largest customer of TSMC’s 5nm process
Previously, AMD officially issued an announcement announcing that it will hold a live event called “together we advance_PCs” at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time on August 29, 2022, to announce next-generation AMD PC products. With the imminent arrival of the Ryzen 7000 series of desktop processors based on the Zen 4 architecture, AMD will be placing massive orders on TSMC’s 5nm process.
According to DigiTimes, AMD has now become the second largest customer of TSMC’s N5 process node, after Apple. Despite the COVID-19 epidemic, the economic downturn, and the decline in PC demand, AMD seems to be better able to cope with the downturn in the industry than Intel. According to industry insiders, it is expected that PC sales may decline by 15%. However, AMD’s market share is lower than Intel’s, and it can be more flexible in strategy, which means that the recession will have less impact on it. At the same time, TSMC’s advanced technology gives AMD some performance advantages.
According to AMD’s plan, a series of new CPU, APU, and GPU products will use TSMC’s 5nm process or an extended 4nm process. In addition to the new desktop processors code-named Raphael, AMD will launch a new generation of EPYC server processors code-named Genoa in November this year, and mobile processors will be updated early next year. Dragon Range and Phoenix Point are targeting different notebook computer markets. Next year for the server market, AMD will also have EPYC server processors codenamed Genoa-X, Siena, and Bergamo, which are equipped with 3D V-Cache technology, products for edge computing, and products for native cloud computing. In terms of GPU, the same is true for the Navi 3x series based on the RDNA 3 architecture and the Instinct MI300 series based on the CDNA 3 architecture.
It was previously reported that AMD is expected to become TSMC’s third largest customer by 2023, and is expected to become the largest customer of the N5 process node.
