Amazon invests $4 billion in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic

Amazon has announced a substantial investment of $4 billion in the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees. This strategic move aims to bolster the deep learning and related services offered through its AWS business, positioning AWS as Anthropic’s primary cloud service provider.

Prior to this, Google had infused $400 million into Anthropic, marking Amazon’s contribution as the second significant capital injection into the company. Additionally, notable entities including Salesforce, Zoom, and Spark Capital have also pledged their financial support to Anthropic.

Anthropic’s Claude 2 bears a resemblance to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company appears to be in the advanced stages of developing a chatbot named “Claude-Next”, anticipated to possess computational capabilities tenfold in its current iteration. Anthropic underscores its commitment to responsible AI design, ensuring both high reliability and predictability.

By investing in Anthropic, Amazon is poised to amplify the AI offerings within its AWS portfolio, strategically positioning itself against competitors like Microsoft and Google in the public cloud market arena.
