Ubuntu Web Remix 20.04.1 released

In July of this year, we reported information about an operating system called Ubuntu Web. This is a new web-based operating system created by the developer Rudra Saraswat, aiming to build a Chrome OS alternative operating system that combines the functions of Ubuntu Linux and Mozilla Firefox browsers. Unlike Chrome OS, it is based on Firefox, and users may be able to run it on any computer.

Currently, Ubuntu Web Remix 20.04.1 has been officially released, which is the first stable version. Ubuntu Web is Rudra Saraswat’s third unofficial Ubuntu remix release. Rudra Saraswat said that Ubuntu Web Remix is a privacy-conscious open-source alternative to Google Chrome OS/Chromium OS, using Firefox instead of Google Chrome/Chromium.

For application installation, Ubuntu Web provides an Open Web Store to download packaged Web applications. It allows users to download software packages in the form of original scripts, and install them by running the command. For example, sudo sh ./install-instagram to install the Instagram application.

It currently supports a large number of packaged web applications such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud, Mastodon, Google Drive, Google Classroom, and Opendesktop. Users can also install other Linux applications using the apt command-line tool.
In addition, Ubuntu Web provides the Anbox tool by default for installing Android applications and provides PlayOnLinux to install Windows applications.
