Ubuntu 17.10 will use the Wayland display server by default

Canonical’s Didier Roche today confirmed that the upcoming use of the Wayland Display Server protocol in the upcoming Ubuntu 17.10 system will naturally include legacy Xorg display servers in all installed versions, but will no longer be the default option. Canonical wanted to give users more time to test Wayland to find and fix BUG to equip it in the long-running version of Ubuntu 18.04 that was released in April 2018.

In the blog post, Roche said

Oh, the last thing …. We’ve planned to switch to Wayland by default in Ubuntu 17.10, and the Xorg session will still be there. This allows more people to have more time to test, by collecting these feedback in order to let us in the next LTS version 18.04 to make the final decision. All changes will be released in the next few weeks, if you are interested, then you can view all these changes.

Roche said there will be a lot of adjustments, including the global menu, HUD, Alt tag behavior, information menu, volume notification, running applications and so on.
